With a little European charm, and a lot of urban vibe, Montréal is always an exciting place to meet. The city is compact, safe and pedestrian-friendly. From the Palais des Congrès (Convention Centre) to your hotel to off-site venues, everything is always within easy reach. Montrealers, of course, are renowned for being easygoing and friendly, and take pride in sharing all of the charm of their city with you. Montréal is an international metropolis, the world’s second-largest French-speaking city after Paris, and home to 3.7 million people representing no fewer than 80 cultural groups. Each year, this compact and green island gem welcomes thousands of visitors who come here to enjoy its combination of Old World charm and new world verve. The IMS2012 steering committee is looking forward to sharing the city with you. You will find information about the city on the IMS2012 website as well as on a custom toursit site that Tourisme Montréal has prepared for IMS2012 attendees.Â
Walking distance or short Metro ride from the convention center
- Montréal boasts extraordinary sites to visit. Located right south of the convention center, the historic Vieux Montréal district is a great place to visit. Take a walk to see the numerous landmarks such as the Basilique Notre-Dame and the Marché Bonsecours, or to shop in one of the boutiques artisanales. For a more educational walk, visit the Pointe-à -Callière Museum of Archaeology and History or the Montreal Science Center. Tired? Hop in a calèche to explore Old Montreal aboard one of these romantic horse-driven carriages.
- Montréal is home to major international festivals and events, and IMS2012 is held right in the middle of the festival season as can be seen from the calendar above. In June, the city is host to hundreds of free shows in the Quartier des Spectacles, a square kilometer of the city packed with more than 80 cultural venues. An incredible cultural effervescence infuses entertainment venues — which are among the best in the country — and spills out into the streets. More informations about festivals around IMS2012.
- If you like museums, you will love Montreal. Take some time to explore the Musée des beaux arts de Montréal with its encyclopedic collection, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal dedicated exclusively to contemporary art or the McCord Museum which celebrates Montréal life.
- Montréal is also renowned for its shopping, restaurants and nightlife. Hundreds of stores and restaurants are spread around the convention center. Take advantage of rainy days to visit the Underground City. With over 32 km of tunnels connecting shopping malls, hotels, museums and universities, this is the largest underground complex in the world.
